2 Timothy 2:23-26 – “Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.”
Explain:
Paul tells them not to get involved in foolish and ignorant controversies that they know will just lead to fights. Followers of Christ should not be quarrelsome, rather they should be kind to everyone, able to teach everyone, and able to correct those who oppose them with gentleness. Through that, God may grant them repentance, and they may themselves submit to the truth of the gospel, and surrender to God’s will in their life.
Apply:
If there were ever a time that we as followers of Christ need to live this out it is today. Our culture is controlled by social media, and social media breeds “foolish and ignorant controversies.” It is way too often that Christians find themselves engaging in these controversies daily on social media. I must be careful to not become quarrelsome when someone opposes me. I must do as Paul says here and treat them with gentleness, because that may, in fact, lead to them coming to repentance and experiencing life change through the gospel.
Respond:
Lord, help me to be kind to those who oppose me so that I may lead them to You.
