Revelation 9:3–6 (NKJV)
3 Then out of the smoke locusts came upon the earth. And to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4 They were commanded not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green thing, or any tree, but only those men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 And they were not given authority to kill them, but to torment them for five months. Their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it strikes a man. 6 In those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.
More than one of the views of Revelation see the “locusts” as demonic forces released on the earth. This makes sense in that they come out of the “bottomless pit” which has “smoke like that of a great furnace.” Their mission is to torment men who will be unable to die, even though they will seek it because of the pain that they are in. There will be one group unaffected by these demonic forces: those who have the seal of God on their foreheads (i.e. those who are believers).
Here are some applications:
- Since this reference is probably to demonic torment, such torment does exist.
- Since they have the symbolic sting of a scorpion and since men will wish to die, but will be unable to do so, their torment must be unbelievably bad.
- Since this is a judgment of God, Satan’s work is always under His ultimate control. Satan is not a puppet of God; he is simply doing what he desires. God, knows how to release and retain him for His own purposes.
- Since none of those who are sealed will be impacted, I can be confident that God protects His own children.
I will thank God for His protection from Satan and his forces.
